As well, with the push of a button, you may be able to tune into the TV band a nice touch if you sometimes have to leave the gawk box in your living room to check on your casserole. Storing radio presets is as straightforward as it gets. There is a three way mega bass switch, as opposed to the on/off volume controls on most small audio units. There is an easy to set cooking timer with a deafening alarm (though you can not set its volume relative to the music that is playing).

The remote control (which takes two AAA batteries, not included) has a magnetic strip on the back, so you may be able to stick it on your fridge or another metal object in your kitchen. Because you attach the screws from the top, objects you place over the screws, inside the kitchen cabinet, tend to be wobbly, natch, and you run the risk of scratches or worse.īut other things about the ICF CD543 are well thought out. It is also a bit puzzling that the screws Sony gives you aren’t flatheads that sink flush into the counter to which you are mounting the unit they are domeheads, so they stick out. In fact, it is pretty near impossible be sure you have a helper on hand. Mounting information are clear and easy to follow (in part thanks to a useful drill template), though it is uncomfortable to use a screwgun or screwdriver with your right hand while trying to keep the ICF CD543 in place with your left. It beats any clock radio I have ever heard, though it falls short of the sound of a first rate boombox. This under cabinet unit isn’t going to win any suggestions from Stereophile magazine, but the sound is better than you may expect from such a small, unobtrusive package. All other features of the system work well but the radio is unusable. The unit doesn’t accept an external antenna, so alternatives are restricted. The AM antenna is interior and the power cord acts as the FM antenna. The radio reception for this system is poor. I live in an urban area with usually good radio signals.
